About Us: History

For A Better Bronx (FABB) is a grassroots, community-based, not-for-profit organization.  FABB emerged out of the South Bronx Clean Air Coalition (SBCAC), established in the early 1990's when community members and activists worked with members of the medical community and local politicians to close a medical incinerator in the South Bronx.  (New York Times, May 6, 1999) This struggle revealed many other environmental health concerns.

FABB was born when SBCAC members sought to understand enviromental justice work with a deep analysis of the systemic oppression of low-income people and communities of color.

Since the mid-90's, FABB has grown through the strong leadership of women and youth of color.  FABB activists have been pioneers in service provision and organizing in the South Bronx.

With attention to the particular racial and economic disparities effecting women and youth, FABB supports residents to make change in their lives and their communities. FABB seeks to improve the lives of all Bronx families through community programs focused on sustainable resources, improved environmental health, economic justice and community education.
