What is a Clean Environment?
Our environment surround us at all times--everything we see, hear, smell and feel. The urban setting of the South Bronx is composed of many elements woven into the physical and social balance of life. Our environment can be life giving, but can also endanger our health and our children's lives.
The Bronx has one of the highest asthma rates in the country. Our emergency rooms are filled with suffering children. Four major expressways and three major thoroughfares intersect here and air pollution levels are extremely high. Four power plants, a waste transfer station and heavy industrial traffic plague our community. High rates of obesity, diabetes and infant mortality are the result of poverty and injustice.
The struggle for clean air, healthy homes, food, health care and employment is a struggle for justice. All residents of the South Bronx deserve to live in a healthy and safe environment. FABB is committed to environmental justice that holistically integrates the social, economic and physical elements of our community life.
